These benign tumors (FIBROIDS) thrive on the female hormones. That why they mostly grow and become symptomatic and problematic for women during reproductive age women and childbearing years.
- a. Incidence: By age of 50 years, around 80% of women will have uterine fibroids but only 20-50% of women will have symptoms such as heavy menses, pelvic pressure and cramps, and urinary urgency and abdominal bloating. African American women are more prone to have symptomatic uterine fibroids compared to Caucasian women.
- b. Size: Fibroids can grow as a single nodule (one) or in a cluster (multiple). Fibroids can vary widely in size. Some are as small as few mm while others are as large as 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter.
